Seven years ago, we discovered Reina and Rosa living in a humble home constructed from corrugated metal sheets and dirt-packed floors. It is the same place where we met them in May of this year.
Their physical environment remained unchanged, but what had transformed was their spirit. Now a ninth-grader, Reina thrives in school, and dreams of one day pursuing a career as a veterinarian or accountant.
As she approaches her 15th birthday, she’s on the cusp of a new educational chapter, determined to achieve her dreams.
Reina benefited from GLXi’s exclusive literacy curriculum, “Open Books, Open Minds.” Our program works for children like Reina because it is delivered by a dedicated team of trained teachers equipped with essential resources, including books.

GLXi is in 179 classrooms across 11 regions throughout Guatemala. We hope to provide each of our 40 teachers with a complete set of books to replace the worn, haggard copies given to them some years ago.
We also want to provide our teachers with a support kit of books to help them address the student learning challenges created by COVID-19 and other learning deficiencies their students express.
